Work continues by FALPS’ intrepid volunteers led by Board President and trail meister extraordinaire, Erik Landgraf and Dr. Ken Feder, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at Central Connecticut State University, on the Soapstone Quarry off the Walt Landgraf trail in Peoples State Forest.
Our latest Friends of American Legion & Peoples State Forests – (FALPS) project has been to build a viewing platform around a several thousand year old soapstone quarry. Indigenous people used this to carve soapstone bowls until the advent of pottery. This large piece of soapstone contains several unfinished bowls. The platform will allow more people to view this Archaeological find.
These photos (thanks to Tim-Deschenes Desmond) were of volunteers in winter working on preparing the Quarry for public viewing. Much has continued since and we’re hoping to open it in late Autumn.
