Join Friends of American Legion and Peoples State Forests (FALPS) on Super Bowl Sunday for a calorie-busting hike led by FALPS President Erik Landgraf!
Meet at the parking lot for Matthies Grove on East River Road in Peoples State Forest, 106 E River Rd., Barkhamsted, CT 06063. Parking is available to the right (toward the North Meadows) and left (toward the pavilion) of the entrance booth. We will meet in the parking lot just to the right as you enter the lot.
Starting from Matthies Grove, we’ll hike up the Robert Ross Trail past the Nature Museum. Depending on weather, trail conditions, and group preference, we may opt to travel on multiple trails for a total hike of approximately 4-6 miles. Along the way, we’ll pause to enjoy scenic overlooks and boardwalks and experience the wonder of nature in winter.
Required Items: Please bring traction devices such as nanospikes or microspikes – we will make a call about using them based on trail conditions. Bring water, freeze-resistant snacks, and personal medications (if applicable). Please dress in layers appropriate for the weather and conditions (base layer, insulating layer, wind layer, etc.) and bring a pack large enough to accommodate extra layers.
Recommended Items: One or two hiking/trekking poles.
Inclement weather and/or unsafe conditions will cancel. Check FALPS’ Facebook page and website for updates. We hope to see you there!
